Unqualified practice in aesthetic medicine has emerged alongside the growing popularity and advancement of cosmetic treatments. In recent years, many clinics dedicated to helping people improve their appearance have opened. The vast majority are professional and safe, but it is also important to address an increasingly common issue: unqualified practice.

In Spain, aesthetic medicine must always be practised by a qualified medical doctor. However, the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME) warns that it discovers new cases of unqualified practice in beauty centres and hair salons virtually “every day.”

This is a dangerous practice for patients, especially considering that the most popular treatments involve botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid. Without proper control over the product or the procedure, complications can range from a drooping eyelid, in the best-case scenario, to damage to a nerve or blood vessel, in the worst. It is not only important that a qualified doctor performs the injections, but also that the medication is in perfect condition.

Necrosis

Contrary to popular belief, hyaluronic acid can be more dangerous than botulinum toxin. If a blood vessel in the lip is injected, blood circulation to that area may be blocked, potentially leading to necrosis—that is, the death of the affected tissue.

In a professional clinic with a specialist doctor, this possibility is anticipated and can be managed very quickly. Your lip will not suffer the consequences of such an error. However, in a hair salon, it is impossible to have the necessary measures in place to deal with these situations.

Unqualified practice in aesthetic medicine often attracts patients through lower prices, but no financial saving can justify putting your health at risk.

“In a procedure as common as laser removal of skin blemishes, it is essential that each lesion, no matter how small, is correctly diagnosed before being treated. It could be skin cancer, and the patient may not be receiving the appropriate treatment, in addition to the risk this poses to their life,” explains Dr. Mercedes Campoy, Head of the Intrusism Committee at SEME.

If you are considering an aesthetic medicine treatment, always make sure you place yourself in the hands of qualified professionals. Only a doctor specialising in aesthetic medicine can achieve results that meet your expectations while ensuring your safety.na médico especializada en medicina estética podrá lograr un resultado a la altura de sus expectativas y sin riesgos.
