The diagnosis
Trichology is a branch of medicine dedicated to the study of the hair and scalp. Its diagnoses are therefore medical acts, just like those carried out in ophthalmology, cardiology, or any other medical specialty. Consequently, the assessment before a hair transplant should always be performed by a doctor. This is the only way to properly design a hair transplant, even though it may involve a higher cost than an evaluation carried out by non-medical staff.
The Treatments
Hair medicine treatments are essential for achieving successful results, both before and after the transplant. Before the procedure, the hair must be healthy and strong, and both the donor and recipient areas need to be prepared to withstand the stress of surgery. Otherwise, the grafts may not survive properly, or the transplanted hair may grow poorly or much more slowly. In total, more than a dozen treatments may be used, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and mesotherapy, each requiring specialised equipment, trained personnel, and clinical time.
The equipment
Although a hair transplant is considered a minor procedure, it requires an extremely high level of precision and specialised instruments. Examples include mechanical circular punches used for extraction, which can be as small as 0.6 mm in diameter, sapphire-tipped blades, brand-new implanters for every procedure, specialised containers and preservation solutions for the follicular units, protective surgical clothing, and micromotors used during extraction.
The investigation
Hair transplantation is becoming increasingly popular worldwide, leading to a continuous stream of scientific research. A skilled hair transplant specialist must stay up to date with the latest developments and apply them in clinical practice whenever appropriate. This requires a significant investment of time in ongoing education—time that cannot be spent performing consultations or procedures but ultimately contributes to achieving better results.
The follow-up
A typical hair transplant session lasts around nine hours, including preparation of the operating room, shaving the patient’s hair when required, pre-operative treatment, follicular unit extraction, implantation, and discharge. The procedure involves the doctor—who, in Spain, is the only professional legally authorised to extract and implant follicular units—together with three or four technicians who classify the grafts and prepare the surgical instruments.
The follow-up
Hair takes time to grow. This means that the final results of a hair transplant are generally not visible until around one year after the procedure. During this period, regular follow-up appointments with the doctor are essential to ensure that everything is progressing correctly. If any issue arises, it should be diagnosed promptly and, where necessary, treated—usually with additional hair restoration therapies. All of these follow-up appointments are medical consultations carried out by the doctor.
