A lo largo de la historia de la humanidad ha habido un problema que los hombres han querido superar, la alopecia. RBaricitinib (Olumiant®) for Alopecia Areata

Throughout history, hair loss has been one of the most common concerns affecting men and women alike. While androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) cannot currently be reversed with medication once follicles have been permanently lost, some other forms of hair loss can be successfully treated with medical therapy.

One of these conditions is alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder for which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Baricitinib (Olumiant®) as a treatment for eligible patients.

Baricitinib represents a significant advance in the management of alopecia areata, a condition characterized by the sudden appearance of one or more well-defined patches of hair loss on the scalp that, in some cases, can progress to complete scalp or body hair loss. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, alopecia areata is believed to occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles.

How does Baricitinib work?

Baricitinib (Olumiant®) belongs to a class of medications known as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. By selectively blocking JAK enzymes, the medication reduces the abnormal immune response responsible for attacking the hair follicles, allowing hair growth to resume in many patients.

Although clinical studies have demonstrated that Baricitinib can be highly effective for alopecia areata, it does not produce successful results in every patient. For this reason, treatment should always be supervised by a physician experienced in the diagnosis and management of hair disorders, such as Dr. Espinosa Custodio.

Before treatment begins, an appropriate medical assessment—including blood tests when indicated—helps determine whether the medication is suitable and establishes the most appropriate dosage for each patient. If the treatment proves effective, it is generally continued until the condition has stabilized. Conversely, if no meaningful therapeutic benefit is observed after an appropriate treatment period, discontinuation may be recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there medications similar to Baricitinib (Olumiant®)?

Yes. Since the approval of Baricitinib, additional JAK inhibitors have been developed and approved in some countries for the treatment of alopecia areata, while others remain under clinical investigation. The most appropriate medication depends on the patient’s medical history, regulatory approvals in their country, and their specialist’s clinical judgment.

Does Baricitinib work for other types of hair loss?

No. Baricitinib is specifically indicated for alopecia areata, an autoimmune form of hair loss. It has not been shown to be effective for androgenetic alopecia or other non-autoimmune forms of hair loss.

Are there medications that can restore hair lost due to androgenetic alopecia?

Current medical treatments for androgenetic alopecia—such as finasteride, dutasteride, and minoxidil—can slow hair loss, preserve existing follicles, and often increase the thickness of miniaturized hairs. However, they cannot regenerate follicles that have already disappeared. When follicles have been permanently lost, hair transplantation remains the only treatment capable of restoring hair growth in those areas.
