Hair transplantation is most commonly performed to treat hair loss on the scalp. However, as with procedures involving the eyebrows, beard, or eyelashes, hair restoration can also be carried out in other areas of the body. One of these less common procedures is pubic hair transplantation.
Although it may seem unusual, pubic hair transplantation is a well-established reconstructive and aesthetic procedure for selected patients. As with scalp hair transplantation, both FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT/FUSS (Follicular Unit Transplantation/Strip Surgery) techniques may be used, although FUE is currently the preferred option because it is minimally invasive and leaves virtually no visible scarring.
For pubic hair restoration, donor follicles are selected from body areas with hair characteristics similar to those of the pubic region, such as the groin, underarms, or the nape of the neck. This procedure is performed more frequently in women than in men.
Reasons for undergoing a pubic hair transplant
Women account for the majority of patients seeking pubic hair transplantation. Hair loss in this area may occur for several reasons.
One possible cause is androgenetic alopecia, which, although most commonly associated with the scalp, can also affect body hair. Ageing and hormonal changes associated with menopause may also lead to a reduction in pubic hair density.
In other cases, the procedure is performed for aesthetic reasons. Excessive or repeated hair removal over many years may permanently damage the hair follicles, preventing natural regrowth. Some patients also choose pubic hair transplantation to help camouflage scars, such as those left by a Caesarean section or other surgical procedures.
The function of pubic hair
Like all body hair, pubic hair serves several biological functions. Just as eyebrows and eyelashes help protect the eyes and nasal hair filters airborne particles, pubic hair helps reduce friction in the genital area and provides a protective barrier for the skin.
Some studies also suggest that pubic hair may contribute to reducing direct skin-to-skin contact during intimate activity, although it should never be considered a substitute for appropriate protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Recovery after pubic hair transplantation
Following the procedure, tiny crusts form around each implanted follicle as part of the normal healing process. These disappear naturally within several days, leaving little or no visible evidence of surgery.
Once the transplanted follicles become established, they produce permanent hair growth, just as in scalp hair transplantation. Final results develop gradually over the following months as the transplanted hairs complete their normal growth cycle.
A successful pubic hair transplant restores a natural appearance that closely resembles the patient’s original hair distribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pubic hair transplant painful?
No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, numbing both the donor and recipient areas. Patients should not experience pain during the surgery itself. Afterwards, mild itching, tenderness, or a slight burning sensation may occur for a few days, but these symptoms are generally mild and temporary.
When will I be fully recovered?
Most patients can resume their normal daily activities within a few days. During the first week, it is important to avoid excessive friction or pressure on the treated area to protect the newly transplanted follicles while they become securely established.
Is pubic hair transplantation safe?
Yes. When performed by an experienced hair restoration surgeon, pubic hair transplantation offers a safety profile comparable to that of a scalp hair transplant. As with any surgical procedure, choosing a qualified physician and an experienced medical team is essential to achieve safe, natural-looking, and long-lasting results.
