Many people don’t realise that before considering a permanent hair transplant, there is a scientifically proven treatment that may help recover thinning hair: your own plasma. Surprising, isn’t it? The key to treating hair loss may already be in your bloodstream through a regenerative technique known as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, or PRP hair treatment. Want to know how it works? In this article from Instituto Médico del Prado, we answer the most common questions.
PRP Hair Treatment in Madrid: What You Should Know
Blood is made up of several components that you have probably heard of, such as haemoglobin, which carries oxygen; white blood cells, which help defend the body; and the one that interests us here: plasma. Plasma is the liquid component of blood and contains a wide variety of proteins and growth factors that can help combat hair loss.
To isolate the platelet-rich plasma, a small sample of the patient’s blood is centrifuged at approximately 3,000 revolutions per minute for around 10 minutes. This separates the plasma from the remaining blood components, producing a concentrated solution rich in platelets and growth factors.
PRP Hair Treatment: Restarting Hair Growth
Once the platelet-rich plasma has been prepared, it is injected into the scalp through a series of tiny intradermal injections. These microinjections stimulate the scalp tissues and encourage the activity of weakened hair follicles, promoting healthier and stronger hair growth.
Because the treatment uses the patient’s own blood, the risk of allergic reactions or rejection is virtually eliminated.
PRP Hair Clinic: Instituto Médico del Prado
Although the procedure itself is relatively straightforward, it requires specialised equipment and strict medical protocols. For this reason, PRP treatment should always be performed in a clinic led by experienced medical professionals.
At Instituto Médico del Prado, Dr. Espinosa Custodio performs PRP therapy in a dedicated medical treatment room designed specifically for regenerative hair treatments and other aesthetic medicine procedures.
The Benefits of PRP Hair Treatment
PRP therapy helps improve hair density by strengthening miniaturised hairs and encouraging the growth of thicker, healthier strands.
The treatment itself is quick, usually taking less than one hour to complete. Since only the patient’s own blood is used, it is considered a very safe procedure with an excellent safety profile.
PRP Hair Treatment for Women
Female hair loss can also respond very well to PRP therapy. The procedure is exactly the same as in men, but because women often experience diffuse thinning rather than complete baldness, improvements in hair density can be particularly noticeable.
In addition to promoting healthier hair growth, PRP stimulates collagen production and supports tissue regeneration within the scalp.
Does PRP Hair Treatment Hurt?
Many patients ask whether PRP injections are painful. Although some discomfort is possible, especially if the procedure is not performed correctly, we do everything possible at Instituto Médico del Prado to minimise any pain.
Before treatment, we follow a specific protocol designed to maximise patient comfort and reduce any potential discomfort during the procedure.
PRP Hair Treatment Results
Most patients begin to notice improvements after the second or third treatment session, usually around one month after starting therapy.
Hair gradually becomes thicker and denser in areas affected by miniaturisation. When appropriate, PRP can also be combined with mesotherapy, typically seven to fourteen days later, to further enhance the results.
Does PRP Really Work?
The answer is yes. Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy is a safe, evidence-based regenerative treatment that has become widely used in many areas of medicine, including orthopaedics, gynaecology and, of course, hair restoration.
At Instituto Médico del Prado, we will assess your individual case, determine whether PRP is the most appropriate treatment for your hair loss, and design a personalised treatment plan.
