Hair density is one of the most important aspects of a hair transplant. To achieve optimal and natural-looking results, it is essential to implant the necessary Follicular Units (FUs), because what truly matters is achieving high hair density. Discover how this is accomplished in this article.
Hair Transplant Density
Discover everything you need to know about your hair density.
How many follicular units are needed for a hair transplant?
Hair density is measured in follicular units per square centimetre (FUs/cm²). Under normal circumstances, people typically have between 50 and 90 FUs/cm², but when density falls below 40 FUs/cm², hair loss usually becomes noticeable.
Several factors determine how many follicular units are needed, including the number of hairs contained in each follicular unit, the texture of the hair, and even the patient’s ethnicity.
How many follicular units can be transplanted?
Rather than asking how many hairs can be transplanted, the real question is how many follicular units are needed to achieve the desired hair density. For example, a patient’s follicular units may contain anywhere from one to six hairs. This directly affects how many follicular units need to be implanted, and it is an important factor that must be considered when planning the transplant.
What hair density can be achieved with a hair transplant?
A hair transplant should achieve a density of more than 45 follicular units per square centimetre. An experienced hair transplant specialist can often exceed 60 FUs/cm², which is generally more than sufficient to produce natural-looking results.
How is the desired hair density achieved?
This is the key question. Achieving the ideal hair density in each area of the scalp depends on the doctor’s experience and surgical skill. Every follicular unit must be implanted at the correct depth and angle to ensure a natural appearance.
What happens if the transplant does not achieve the required hair density?
Although uncommon, this situation can occur. It is more likely if fewer follicular units are implanted than originally planned, or if the grafts have remained outside the scalp for too long and are no longer viable. In these cases, the final result may appear unnatural.
How can hair density be increased?
There are several reasons why a patient may wish to increase hair density. Early-stage hair loss or an unsatisfactory hair transplant are two common examples. At Instituto Médico del Prado, we offer a range of medical treatments, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and mesotherapy, to help improve hair density.
