At Instituto Médico del Prado, the hair analysis performed during the diagnostic consultation is carried out with the help of the HairMetrix by Canfield system. Together with the doctor, it is one of the foundations of an excellent hair treatment plan, which may lead to a hair transplant or to other treatments such as PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) or Mesotherapy.
Only with an accurate diagnosis can we determine the cause of alopecia, assess its stage, and establish how to reverse it. Dr. Espinosa Custodio’s experience has shown that many of the patients who come to the clinic have miniaturised hair. Without a proper diagnosis, a hair transplant could be recommended straight away.
Having HairMetrix by Canfield is a great advantage. It makes misdiagnosing androgenetic alopecia more difficult, as it visually explains the main parameters of trichology.
HairMetrix by Canfield Hair Analysis: How Is It Performed?
HairMetrix by Canfield is a hair recognition software that works together with a special dermatoscope called VisioMed. While most dermatoscopes require a small circular area of hair to be shaved, VisioMed can be used on any type of hair, providing a significant advantage for the patient.
The doctor specialising in hair medicine places the dermatoscope on the areas to be analysed and takes several photographs. The software uses artificial intelligence to identify each individual hair in the images and generates a report.
HairMetrix combines the different reports from each photograph into a single colour report that is both highly accurate and easy to understand.
HairMetrix: What Does This Hair Analysis Measure?
The parameters measured by HairMetrix are:
- Average number of hairs per follicular unit: each follicular unit can contain between one and four (or even more) hairs. Therefore, the more follicular units with multiple hairs, the greater the hair density, and vice versa.
- Average hair shaft thickness: measured in microns, it determines how thick the patient’s hairs are.
- Distance between follicular units: the distance between hairs is a key parameter in determining whether hair density is high or low.
- Ratio of hairs in the anagen and telogen phases: hairs in the anagen phase are actively growing, while those in the telogen phase are shedding. The greater the proportion of growing hairs, the lower the likelihood of androgenetic alopecia in the analysed area.
- Number of follicles per square centimetre: the amount of hair present in the area where the photograph was taken.
The Importance of a Good Hair Analysis
A good trichologist should know how to perform a hair analysis using any dermatoscope. However, having HairMetrix by Canfield provides excellent support and helps achieve a more accurate hair analysis.
It is also particularly useful for comparing the condition of the hair before and after treatment. It allows us to determine scientifically how much the hair has improved in terms of density, thickness, and growth.
At Instituto Médico del Prado, we use HairMetrix to perform all our hair diagnoses. In addition, it is also used throughout hair medicine treatments and at the end of the treatment process.
