What does it involve? Is it really effective? How much does it cost? Is it painful?
Hair mesotherapy, or intradermotherapy, is a medical treatment that consists of administering medications and vitamins through small, but numerous, intradermal injections into the scalp. It can be performed under local anaesthesia so that it is virtually painless.
Mesotherapy with Dutasteride
Mesotherapy with dutasteride microinjections is a novel treatment for male and female androgenetic alopecia. It consists of applying a medication called dutasteride to the scalp, an anti-androgen drug that helps improve the thickness of the hair follicles. The number of sessions and the frequency of application will vary depending on the degree of alopecia.
Effects of hair mesotherapy with dutasteride on hair
Research carried out in recent years has provided experimental and clinical evidence demonstrating that hair mesotherapy with dutasteride improves blood microcirculation, revitalises the hair follicles, improves the trophism of the scalp and increases hair thickness and volume.
Dr. Espinosa Custodio, at his clinic in Madrid, Instituto Médico del Prado, always insists to his patients that all pharmacological and intradermal treatments (PRP, mesotherapy, etc.) are aimed at improving the follicles; they will never generate new hair. The only solution when there are no follicles is to perform a hair transplant. For this reason, it is very important that the diagnosis is carried out by a specialist doctor so that the causes of the alopecia can be determined, as well as the most appropriate treatment for the patient. In our case, in addition to Dr. Espinosa’s experience, we have a trichoscope that analyses hair density and follicle thickness (HairMetrix by Canfield).
Scientific evidence and results
There is extensive scientific evidence supporting the intradermal use of dutasteride. There are more and more international scientific articles supporting its use, such as the one carried out by doctors Moftah, Abd-Elaziz, Ahmed, Hamed, Ghannam e Ibraim in 2013.
In our experience, we can affirm that the use of mesotherapy with dutasteride is a very effective treatment for combating androgenetic alopecia, obtaining very good medium-term results (6/8 months) and without adverse side effects.

Complementary treatments to hair mesotherapy with dutasteride
There are other treatments that also help increase hair density, such as pharmacological treatments with minoxidil, finasteride or dutasteride, which can be administered orally or topically as a lotion. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is also a treatment that can be combined with mesotherapy with dutasteride.
Depending on the patient, other medications such as melatonin, latanoprost, cyproterone, etc., may be administered. Dr. Espinosa studies each patient’s case in detail to analyse which treatment is the most appropriate for each of them. In many cases, it should be a combination of several treatments to achieve greater effectiveness.
Hair mesotherapy with dutasteride is a highly recommended treatment for patients who have undergone a hair transplant. It may also be indicated for patients who are going to undergo a hair transplant in the coming months.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does hair mesotherapy with dutasteride cost in Madrid?
The price will vary depending on the sessions the patient needs. However, you can consult the prices of treatments that include mesotherapy with dutasteride at our clinic in Madrid at any time.
How many sessions should I have to obtain visible results?
It will depend on the situation of each patient. The doctor should determine how many sessions are necessary and their frequency.
Does mesotherapy involve any risks?
It is a very safe treatment, but it is normal for the scalp to be a little sensitive during the following days; at most, this will subside within 2 or 3 days.
What care should I follow?
No special care is required either before or after hair mesotherapy. We recommend not doing intense exercise on the day of the treatment.
Is the treatment painful?
The microinjections may cause slight discomfort. To minimise this, if the patient is sensitive to pain, local anaesthesia is applied before performing the procedure.
