Online consultation for androgenetic alopecia

The online consultation is carried out by our medical team specialising in trichology, including Dr Bonilla Juárez and Dr Gallardo Madrid. It is focused on the accurate diagnosis and treatment of androgenetic alopecia (both male and female pattern hair loss).

Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in men and is primarily related to genetic and hormonal factors. At our clinic, we approach every case individually, ensuring a specific treatment plan tailored to each patient’s particular situation.

The main objective of treatment is to slow the progression of androgenetic alopecia. In addition, most patients achieve a significant improvement in hair density, as medical therapies help to thicken existing miniaturised hairs.

Online consultation process for hair loss

During the consultation, your assigned trichology specialist (Dr Bonilla Juárez or Dr Gallardo Madrid) will carry out a detailed assessment, including your medical history and an evaluation of your hair condition, to determine the type of alopecia and the most appropriate treatment. The entire process is carried out online for your convenience.

This online consultation for androgenetic alopecia is designed to provide you with clear and accurate guidance on the treatment options best suited to your case.

Dr Gallardo usually requests blood tests to assess the patient’s general health. Patients living in Spain can have these tests carried out through their health insurance or at our collaborating Megalabs centres (subject to conditions), while patients living abroad should arrange the blood tests through their own health insurance or preferred laboratory.

If, during the consultation, our medical team determines that medical treatment alone will not be sufficient to improve your condition and that a hair transplant is necessary, you will be clearly informed of the next steps, ensuring you receive the best possible guidance and care.

Treatment options and medication

Oral medical treatments are the first-line option for treating androgenetic alopecia. Subsequently, intradermal treatments such as hair mesotherapy or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) may be considered to enhance the results.

Pharmacological and intradermal treatments for androgenetic alopecia are intended to stop the progression of hair loss and improve existing hair. However, they are not effective at generating new hair in areas where hair is no longer present. In these cases, a hair transplant is required.

The following treatments are effective against androgenetic alopecia:

  • Finasteride and Dutasteride: Anti-androgen medications that reduce DHT levels, the hormone responsible for androgenetic alopecia.
  • Minoxidil: Helps improve the thickness of hair follicles. The oral formulation is generally recommended.
  • Cetirizine and Melatonin: Complement other treatments, improving the overall effectiveness of therapy.

At Instituto Médico del Prado, our specialists (Dr Bonilla Juárez, Dr Gallardo and Dr Espinosa Custodio) prefer to adjust medication dosages according to each patient’s individual needs. For this reason, they often prescribe compounded medications, which are custom-prepared by a specialised pharmacy following the doctor’s prescription when suitable commercial products are not available.

We will also recommend pharmacies and laboratories that can deliver your medication directly to your home, whether you are in Spain, Mexico or anywhere else in Europe.

Ongoing treatment and maintenance

At present, there is no curative treatment for male androgenetic alopecia. However, available treatments should be maintained over the long term in order to preserve the results. If treatment is discontinued, patients may retain part of the improvement for a period of time.

During the initial phase of treatment, a more intensive strategy is used to maximise results. After this period, the frequency and intensity of treatment can be reduced, making it more comfortable and sustainable over the long term.
